Does Your Energy Bill Make you Scream?
5 ways to keep your bills from causing a fright
October is the scariest time of year, with ghouls and goblins popping up all over town. What shouldn’t make you scream is your energy bill. If your energy bills give you a cold sweat, change that today by implementing some of these energy-saving tips!
1. Replace your old appliances.
Energy Star certified appliances could save you around $575 per year. Even if you can’t purchase all new appliances, aim to replace one or two a year. Many home improvement stores have annual appliance sales, and interest-free promotions throughout the year to make your purchases more affordable.
2. Upgrade your light bulbs.
Energy Star certified LED bulbs are around 90% more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs and have an incredibly long operational life (many lasting around 50,000 hours). If you leave an LED bulb on for 12 hours every day, it should last for about 11 years.
3. Wash your laundry with cold water.
Your washing machine uses 90% of its energy heating the water. Switch your water temperature settings to cold as often as possible.
4. Change the thermostat.
Enormous amounts of energy are wasted when we are asleep or away from home. Save energy during these times by changing your thermostat settings. Your energy savings are around 1% for every degree you lower your thermostat. To save 10% annually, aim to set your thermostat back 7 to 10 degrees for 8 hours each day.
5. Replace your air filters.
Air filters need to be replaced on a regular schedule to ensure your A/C is functioning efficiently. At a minimum, you should change your air filter every 3 months. A clean air filter can lower your air conditioner’s energy consumption by 15%.
